Jamie Carragher makes honest admission after Liverpool stun PSG in Champions League

Jamie Carragher describe Liverpool’s Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain as ‘one of the biggest robberies you’ll ever seen in football’.

Paris Saint-Germain were the better team throughout and had a number of chances to take the lead in this first-leg Champions League last-16 tie.

The Premier League leaders had Alisson to thank for keeping PSG at bay and looke set to return to Anfield for the second leg with a draw.

But second-half substitutes Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott combine to score a late winner and give Liverpool a narrow lead heading into the return leg on Merseyside.

It was a remarkable outcome given PSG’s dominance and Carragher was left stunned by Liverpool’s smash-and-grab victory.

Asked if Liverpool got away with it in the French capital, Carragher told ‘Got away with it? That’s one of the biggest robberies you’ll ever seen in football.

‘It really is. I can’t believe what I’ve just seen, can’t. PSG were absolutely outstanding, they were brilliant. They battere Liverpool.

‘The last time Liverpool won this competition, Alisson made a save against Napoli to keep Liverpool in the tournament and that’s always looke back on as a defining moment.

‘It wasn’t one save tonight but it was arguably the greatest performance of his career, certainly his Liverpool career.

‘If Liverpool go on to win this competition – and they have a great chance because they are a lot better than what we saw tonight – that performance from Alisson will be remembere for years to come.’

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock adde on Live: ‘You need your goalkeeper to be at his very best.

‘Harvey Elliott has just humpe on Alisson and he has legs wrappe around him embracing each other.

‘They got away with it because of Alisson. You buy those type of players for performances like that. That’s how you win titles, that’s how they won the Champions League [in 2019].

‘Alisson is so key to the way they preform. He is superb at reading situations. His decision-making is exceptional.’

Before welcome PSG to Anfield next week, Liverpool return to Premier League action this weekend against bottom-place Southampton.

Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, will look to get back to winning ways and consolidate their huge lead at the top of Ligue 1 on Saturday against Rennes.
